C.A. Hoyer Sterling Silver Violin Bow circa 1910-1920

Hoyer ACHM trade mark between two crossed bows near the adjuster GERMANY upside down on audience side Carl Adolf Hoyer the senior (1840-1914) learned the craft of bow making in Markneukirchen from his father Christian Friedrich Hoyer. In 1865 C. Adolf Hoyer set up his own shop in Markneukirchen. By 1912 C. A. Hoyer’s firm was said to have been the largest bow making shop in Markneukirchen. The director of the firm was C. A. Hoyer’s son Carl Willy Hoyer (1879-1955). He managed the firm and was very successful until forced to close down in 1945. After the war Willy settled in Switzerland and founded another bow making company. He made bows and managed a shop until his death there in 1955. The bow could easily pass for a Hoyer bow stylistically made before 1900. The consistency of the Hoyer work in the stick, head, and frog remained quite faithful to the Pfretzschner workshop bows and the classic style of bows of Markneukirchen. What gives the bow away that it was made a little later than Carl Adolf Hoyer’s dates is the trademark on the bow with the two crossed bows at the end of the bow. The bow is beautiful pernambuco wood, which is orange/brown color. The stick is round in section and sterling silver in the mounts. The bow is all original in its fittings and head.
